The SBA Loan Process, Step by Step

The SBA 7(a) loan process has five phases: prepare your documents, apply with a lender, lender underwriting, SBA approval, and closing and funding. The complete cycle typically takes 30 to 90 days — and how ready your documents are determines most of that timeline. Know what you're assembling before you start — see the full SBA document set. The timeline detail is in our SBA loan timeline guide.

Before you start

Confirm two things before investing time in an application:

  • Eligibility — your business must be for-profit, US-based, independently owned, meet SBA size standards, and use proceeds for an allowable purpose (SBA SOP 50 10).
  • Repayment ability — lenders must show the business can repay. Have realistic cash flow projections ready.

Step 1: Prepare your application documents

This is where almost all the time and risk lives. A complete 7(a) package needs:

  • SBA Form 1919 (Borrower Information Form)
  • SBA Form 413 (Personal Financial Statement)
  • 2–3 years business tax returns + interim
  • Business financial statements + cash flow projections
  • Personal tax returns (owners)
  • Business plan / use of proceeds
  • Entity documents, debt schedule, leases, licenses

Tip: Tools like PrepSBA auto-fill Forms 1919 and 413 and validate everything in real time, compressing this step from months to under an hour.

Step 2: Choose a lender and apply

You can work with any SBA-approved lender — big banks, community banks, credit unions, or online SBA lenders. Submit your full package, not partial documents. Applying to a few lenders is common. The SBA itself is not where you apply; a participating lender originates the loan.

Step 3: Lender underwriting

The lender verifies credit, collateral, and eligibility, and packages the loan under SBA SOP 50 10. Delays here trace back almost entirely to incomplete documents from Step 1.

Step 4: SBA decision

For 7(a), the lender submits to the SBA and gets a decision in roughly 5–10 business days. Incomplete submissions slow this down or get returned.

Step 5: Closing and funding

After approval, the lender issues the loan authorization, you sign closing documents, and funds disburse.

Fastest path to a completed SBA loan

  1. Prepare the complete, validated package before contacting lenders.
  2. Use current financials (within 90 days).
  3. Get forms right the first time.
  4. Apply with a lender that knows the SBA process.
