How Long Does an SBA Loan Take?

Most SBA 7(a) loans close in 30 to 90 days from application to funding — and the SBA's own decision takes 5 to 10 business days once your lender submits a complete package. Everything depends on how ready your documents are. See why below, and how to shorten it. Before you start, know the full set of SBA documents your package needs. The deeper eligibility picture is in our 7(a) complete guide.

The SBA loan timeline, step by step

Step 1: Application preparation — 1 to 4 weeks (your biggest lever)

Before your lender sees anything, your application package must include SBA Form 1919 (Borrower Information), SBA Form 413 (Personal Financial Statement), 2–3 years of business financials, cash flow projections, a business plan, tax returns, and entity documents.

This is where applications stall. Most borrowers spend 3 to 6 months gathering and correcting these documents. Preparing the package completely before submission is the single fastest way to compress your total timeline.

Step 2: Lender underwriting — 1 to 3 weeks

Once your package is submitted, the lender verifies credit, collateral, and eligibility under SBA SOP 50 10. Delays here almost always trace back to incomplete or inconsistent documents from Step 1.

Step 3: SBA decision — 5 to 10 business days (7(a))

The SBA's own review takes roughly 5 to 10 business days for a complete submission. Note that "complete" is doing a lot of work in that sentence — incomplete packages get returned or sit in queues.

Step 4: Closing & funding — 1 to 2 weeks

After SBA approval, the lender issues the loan authorization, closing documents are signed, and funds disburse.

What actually causes delays

  • Missing or incomplete documents — adds 3–6+ months
  • Errors on Forms 413 / 1919 — adds 2–8 weeks (round-trips)
  • Stale financials (older than 90 days) — adds 2–4 weeks
  • Unresolved credit issues — varies, often 1–3 months

How to shorten your timeline

  1. Prepare the full document set before contacting a lender.
  2. Use current financials — statements must be within 90 days.
  3. Get documents right the first time — one corrected Form 413 round-trip can cost weeks.
  4. Use document-prep software like PrepSBA to auto-fill Forms 1919 and 413, generate cash flow projections, and validate documents in real time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does SBA loan approval take?
The SBA's own decision typically takes 5–10 business days after a complete submission. The full process — from application to closing and funding — averages 30–90 days.
Why is my SBA loan taking so long?
Almost always incomplete or incorrect documents. Lenders and the SBA both pause on missing or inconsistent items, which is why preparation is the phase where most of the timeline is lost.
Can I speed up an SBA loan?
Yes. Submit a complete, validated package up front. The SBA's own review is relatively fast; the loan origination timeline is almost entirely driven by how ready your documents are when they go in.
Is there a way to get SBA documents ready faster?
Tools like PrepSBA auto-fill SBA Forms 1919 and 413, generate cash flow projections, and validate documents in real time — compressing the preparation phase from months to under an hour, so your total timeline shrinks dramatically.
