How to Qualify for an SBA Loan

The eligibility requirements are more achievable than most business owners think. Here's exactly what lenders and the SBA look for — and how to position your application for approval.

The Four Core Requirements

At its most basic level, SBA loan qualification comes down to four things:

  1. Business eligibility — for-profit, operating in the US, independently owned, small by SBA standards.
  2. Owner equity — you have a meaningful stake (typically 10–30%) in the business.
  3. Repayment ability — your business cash flow can service the debt.
  4. Creditworthiness — a reasonable personal and business credit profile.

Lenders evaluate all four together. You can be credit-perfect but still denied if your business can't show repayment ability — and vice versa.

Credit Score Requirements

There's no single "magic number," but most SBA lenders look for a personal credit score around 680 or higher. Some lenders work with 640+. Your business credit, owner history, and any past bankruptcies or tax liens all factor in.

  • 680+: Strong position for 7(a) approval
  • 640–679: Possible, may need compensating strengths
  • Under 640: Harder; consider building credit first or a co-signer

Revenue and Time in Business

More important than raw revenue is consistent, documented cash flow. Lenders want to see that your business has a track record and that the numbers are real.

  • Time in business: Most lenders prefer 2+ years. Startups can still qualify but face a higher bar.
  • Revenue: No hard minimum across all lenders, but consistent profitability helps.
  • Debt service coverage: Lenders typically want your cash flow to cover debt payments by a comfortable margin.

The Documentation You'll Need

This is where most applications stall. Have these ready:

  • 3 years of business and personal tax returns
  • Business and personal financial statements
  • Bank statements (last 3–6 months)
  • A business plan with realistic projections
  • SBA Form 413 (Personal Financial Statement)
  • SBA Form 1919 (Borrower Information)
  • Proof of ownership and licenses

PrepSBA auto-fills forms like SBA 1919 and SBA 413, validates your documents, and assembles a lender-ready package — so you don't get sent back for missing or incorrect paperwork.

Strengthen Your Application

  • Pay down existing debt to improve your debt-to-income ratio
  • Make sure personal and business tax returns are consistent
  • Prepare clear, conservative financial projections
  • Keep business and personal finances clearly separated
  • Address any credit issues with a plan (not just a hope)

If your application had red flags — inconsistent numbers, missing documents, or thin cash flow — the approval odds drop sharply. That's the gap PrepSBA is built to close.
