How Much Can I Borrow with an SBA Loan?

The program limit is $5 million — but most borrowers won't get that. Here's how lenders actually decide your loan size. Whatever the amount, lenders will scrutinize your paperwork — SBA document preparation is where most approvals are won or lost. For real estate and equipment, see our SBA 504 loan guide.

The Program Cap vs. What You Actually Get

The SBA 7(a) program limit is $5 million, but that's the ceiling — not a target. Your actual loan amount is driven by two things: the lender's appetite and your ability to repay.

Express is capped at $500K; 504 at $5M for fixed assets; microloans at $50K. See current program limits.

The #1 Factor: Repayment Ability

The single biggest determinant of your loan size is whether your business cash flow can comfortably service the debt. Lenders look at your Debt Service Coverage Ratio (DSCR) — generally wanting it at 1.25x or higher.

Example: If your business has $300K in annual cash flow available for debt service, a lender comfortable at 1.25x DSCR might allow roughly $240K in annual payments — which supports a much larger loan than many borrowers expect.

Other Factors Lenders Weigh

  • Collateral: Real estate, equipment, inventory, and receivables back the loan.
  • Credit: Personal and business credit history.
  • Owner equity: Your stake in the business (typically 10–30%).
  • Time in business: Established businesses can typically borrow more.
  • Industry: Some industries carry different risk profiles.

How to Estimate Your Amount

  1. Calculate your stable annual cash flow available for debt service.
  2. Divide by the DSCR your lender targets (typically 1.25–1.5).
  3. Use that to back into a monthly payment you can sustain.
  4. Factor in loan term and interest rate to estimate the principal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum SBA loan amount?
The SBA 7(a) loan cap is $5 million, but the amount you actually qualify for is driven by repayment ability — lenders target a debt service coverage ratio around 1.25–1.5x — plus credit, collateral, and time in business.
How much SBA loan can I get with my revenue?
As a rule of thumb, lenders underwrite roughly 25–40% of stable annual cash flow as debt service. Use your stable cash flow divided by your target DSCR (1.25–1.5) to estimate what you can support.
Does my credit score affect how much I can borrow?
Yes. A stronger personal credit profile (660+ for most 7(a) lenders) improves both approval odds and the amount lenders are willing to extend.
How is my SBA loan amount calculated?
Lenders combine repayment ability, collateral, credit history, time in business, and industry risk to set the amount — repayment ability is the dominant factor.
